The Hangzhou World Foreign Language Primary School (WFLPS), established in 2013, is a private day school serving grades 1-5, located in Gong Shu District in Hangzhou. The WFLPS currently consists of two departments: The Bilingual Department and the IB-PYP Department (International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Program).

Directed by the school board, the principal takes full responsibility for school management. Wang Junjin, chairman of Juneyao Group, chairs the school board. Wang Xiaping, the founder of the school, serves as vice chairman, and is honored as a Model Worker by the Shanghai Municipal Government and as an Outstanding Educator by the State.

Currently, the Hangzhou Campus is a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

Curriculum & Mission

Taught bilingually, the PYP curriculum prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. The PYP curriculum contains three key components, which explain how students learn, how educators teach, and the principles and practice of effective assessment within the program.

Characteristics of the PYP carry over to the other school departments. The school stresses on upgrading pupils’ moral standards, raising their international awareness and cultivating their potential for further development. Importance is attached to their basic knowledge and capability. The ultimate goal is to lay a good foundation for the pupils who are expected to become well-educated international citizens with competitive strengths.

School Departments

The IB Primary Years Program focuses on the holistic development of the child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and the outside world. Inquiry-based learning is a distinctive feature of the PYP, and the six trans-disciplinary themes are organized into Units of Inquiry where the central ideas are challenging, interesting, and relevant. Using the PYP Curriculum as a base, these Units are supplemented with local materials to ensure meaningful learning for the students. Formative and summative assessments provide guidance for teachers and students on competencies, knowledge and skills.

The Bilingual Department focuses on not only basic knowledge but also comprehensive skills. Though less pressure is placed on the students, high quality of learning is maintained. The Local Chinese curriculum is reinforced with a focus on the three main subjects (Mandarin, Math & Science, and English), and students undergo at least two lessons of foreign English teaching each day. These subjects are further fortified with the incorporation of international materials.

In the PYP Department, each class of students has two teachers (Chinese and English) who plan collaboratively and have shared responsibilities. All teachers are qualified, experienced in teaching, and undergo regular appraisal and professional development on teaching pedagogy. In the Bilingual Department, foreign teachers usually hold an ESL or EFL qualification as well as a degree (though not in Education) and are responsible for one year level.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Based on the school’s mission and learner profile, moral education forms a system. The school has thereby formed a mode for developing good habits, which it calls, “One, Two, Three, Four, March On.” The aim is to develop good quality and personality. In this system, students participate in three modes of activities: regular mode, seasonal mode, and grade mode.
